Chapter 15

A

s soon as Frank left, I dialed Detective Palmer’s cell phone. My hands shook, and I had to dial twice before I got the right number.

Palmer answered with, “Hey, Isabella. Can I call you back? I'm right in the middle of something.”

Not even a hello. He must be busy. I almost said yes, but there was no way I'd be able to sleep if I didn't tell him about Frank's threat. At least he could tell me if it was something to worry about or not. “Frank, Trina's ex-husband, threatened me over money and I'm worried he's going to hurt me.”

The distracted tone in his voice vanished. “Is he there with you now?”

“No. I’m alone.”

“Okay. Stay where you are. Lock the doors and window and I'll be there in three minutes. Don't let anyone in until I get there.”

I nodded, although it didn't matter that I hadn't answered him, because he hung up on me. I locked the front and back doors, turned off the lights, and sat under the desk in the office, hugging my knees to my chest and telling myself Palmer would be here any second. His immediate reaction made me realize I should have taken the threat more seriously.

It wasn't long before I heard banging at the front door and Palmer's voice calling my name. I rolled my shoulders to release the tension I held since I hung up the phone, crawled out from under the desk, and opened the door.

“Are you still alone?” he asked.

My lip quivered as I nodded.

He put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me to him. “I've got someone checking out the back of the building, and we've got a BOLO out on Frank. You're safe now, and you don't need to worry.”

His reassurance was all I needed to let my guard down fully, and the tears flowed. I hated it when I got all weak like that. My cousins and I had taken years of self-defense classes, and I thought I could defend myself reasonably well, though I’d never had to. I rubbed my eyes and tried to calm my mind. “Thank you. I feel much better now.”

“I'll need to take a statement. Is there somewhere we can sit and talk?” he asked.

I led him to the office, and we sat in the visitors’ chairs. I still wasn't comfortable using Trina’s chair.

Palmer pulled out a notepad. “Take your time, and tell me what happened in as much detail as possible.”

I explained the threat and how I had no idea where I was going to get a thousand dollars a week. It was at that point I broke down again. I didn't want to die like Trina.

He handed me a tissue from the desk. “You don't have to pay the money. You don't owe it to him, her estate does, and I’m sure something can be worked out. Trina may have had an agreement with him, but you don't. With a threat like that, I suggest you get a restraining order so he'll have to stay away from you.
